Update from Law: As of 16 November 2023, plans are to tear down Marvin's and the surrounding shops and put in a Meijer's.
I am referencing Tally Hall as a mall but it was really a large food court. It was also part of Hunter's Square Shopping Center. The hall was the original location of Marvelous Marvin's Mechanical Museum which subsequently moved to its own space in the same shopping center.
Personal recollection: I frequented this attraction many times in the 1980's. Some of the food stands were excellent and Marvin's was like nothing I had ever seen. Orchard Lake Rd is a bit of a mess now, but in those days you could attend a movie at the Old Orchard 3 or American West and hit Tally Hall for dinner which was a great date night for sure. According to the historical news articles, the place always struggled financially since opening. From what I recall, it was pretty busy in the early 1980's.
Modeled after Boston's Faneuil Hall, there were roughly 30 food vendors inside the mall. It was an open air concept in the sense the restaurants were basically stalls lined up around the perimeter with tables in the middle. There were decorative banners hanging from the high ceiling. Marvelous Marvin's was originally inside Tally Hall but eventually moved out. Marvin's outlasted the food court idea and is still going as of 2022.
The Tally Hall concept was also tried in Ann Arbor MI. I will probably post information on that here as I find more. There was also the Birmingham version at Piccadilly Mall. I am not positive that came to fruition but it was being planned in 1987.
