First given a P.o. named ELLISVILLE in 1905. An early resident thought nearby Pigeon River resembled the Afton River in Scotland, and its P.O. was so renamed in 1906. "Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes," wrote Robert Burns in his poem Sweet Afton, inspiring the use of the name in several places in America.
