The 300 room Capitol Park Motor Hotel opened with great fanfare in June 1961. It was a new building adjacent to the old Porter Apartments that went back to the early 1900's. The 2 buildings became the Capitol Park. Eventually hard times came for the hotel and the newer portion was converted to a Days Inn in the 1980's.
The old Porter portion remains standing as of 2023 but the 1961 portion has been demolished. Michigan Catholic Conference sits on the old lot today. This motel was part of the Gold Key chain which consisted of Autorama Motel, Harlan House Motel, Park Plaza Motel, Fairlane Inn, Holiday Motel, Capitol Park Motor Hotel, and Hines Park Motel.
