Update 1-1-2023: I was going through my photo archives and I found some nice ones of this place that I took in 2003. I didn't know the name of the place when I took them but recognized them immediately just now. Enjoy!
The 100 room Executive Inn was opened with much fanfare in 1960 for about 1.25 million dollars (about 12 million in 2022 dollars). That was a lot of money back then. It was on Van Dyke and was a favorite lodging choice for those doing business at the GM Tech Center. It had options tailored for average travelers as well as executive suites for a more high-end experience. The architecture was striking for the time. It had a large ballroom within the cylindrical section that was very pronounced from the exterior view. There was nothing else like it on Van Dyke before or since.
It had a restaurant that could handle 188 patrons and cocktail lounge of course. It also featured 164 circular brass chandeliers. The place eventually fell on hard times and was re-named the Royal Coventry Inn. When the end came in 2004 or so, the last tenant was Golden Harvest Chinese Restaurant. Sadly, it had become a haven for a criminal element. It was demolished and today some nondescript modern hotels sit on (or near) the lot. This is a good example of what we have had and have lost. No company would take the time and spend the dollars necessary to provide this type of unique experience as of 2022.
