My original entry on this motel had the location wrong. In discovering my mistake, I found the correct location. In addition, I found out what the building on Old Corunna Rd was that I went out and got photos of. In actuality, it was a restaurant in the shape of a motel. These kinds of attractions are among my favorites because they are a bit obscure, sort of tucked away on country roads. You wouldn't expect they could support a business given the lower traffic count and decreased visibility. And yet, both of these places operated for years. I would surmise that prior to I-69 being completed, M-21 was a major east-west thoroughfare.
Starting with the motel, it was actually at 10390 Corunna Rd and was still standing until sometime after 2015. By 2018, it was demolished. Fortunately, thanks to historical street views, we have some grainy photos of it to see. Part of the reason I found the address was the connection to a notorious crime involving 2 prison escapees who had committed murder. They also robbed this motel while on the lamb. The newspapers covered that and helpfully included the address.
There were some other mentions regarding firewood for sale and some tax issues. Another owner was also mentioned which was Herbert G. Andrews from 1984. The 2 original owners, Gordon and Bernice Hull, came up in the death notices. They operated this place for 14 years. They were originally from Albion and moved to the area to open this place. The motel appears on the historical aerials around 1957. It came up for sale in 1985 so it was still operating as a motel then. In 2015, it came up for sale as commercial property. That completes the story on the motel.
That leaves us with the building I found which I originally thought was the motel due to the similarity in the structure and the general location. That turned out to be Isidoro's Restaurant at 12368 Old Corunna Rd, which has long since been closed but still stands. It was operated by Isidoro Anselmo, who passed away in 2015. That restaurant was also known as the Halfway House (prior to 1980), which probably refers to the fact it was the midpoint between Flint and Owosso.
